What to do in Case of an Accident?

Accidents can be a horrifying experience for anyone. Nonetheless, you need to make sure to calm yourself down. Regain you composure and do the following:

  1. Report the incident to the police
In case of an accident, usually the first responders will be the police or traffic enforcers. They will gather details about the incident and note damage to vehicle and parties involved.

It would be best to request for a police report since this is one of the requirements for filing insurance claims.

  2. Take pictures of the accident and all involved
Proof is your #1 ally in case of an accident. Make sure to take photos of the scene and emphasize damages and vehicles involved.

  3. Document accident specifics
Work with the other party and exchange information on: Names, contact details, addresses, model & plate number of involved vehicles, driver’s license, and insurance policy coverage.

Car Insurance Claim Process

The claims process for each insurance provider may vary but typically follow similar procedures:

  1. Provide requirements stated above
  2. Initial review and evaluation by insurance provider
  3. Evaluation results and approval  (10-15 days)
  4. Insurance provider offers client either a Letter of authority (LOA) or cash settlement for necessary repairs
  5. If LOA: To be sent to dealer/accredited car repair shop
  6. If cash settlement: Insurance provider to call client for pickup of check

Possible Reasons for Rejection of Claims

Filing for a car insurance claim is not a 100% guarantee that you will get a LOA for your vehicle repairs. Here are some possible reasons for rejection of your insurance claim:

  • “Fraud” or intentional misinformation (i.e. wrong information on identity, vehicle, etc.)
  • Intentionally causing injury or damage to property
  • Driving against the law (e.g. driving under the influence, driving without a license, etc.)
  • Settlement with other party at the site of accident
  • Unit fixed before filing for insurance claim
  • Unpaid insurance premiums
  • Damages found to be there even before accident
